It is surrounded by nature in the Alto Monferrato area near Ovada, close to Liguria. Much of its territory, home to 370 people, lies within the Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park. Established in 1979 and now part of the Piedmont Apennine Protected Areas Authority, it is one of the largest nature reserves in Piedmont, right on the Ligurian border.
The village’s origins are ancient. Nearby are the Lavagnina lakes, the Piota stream, and the gold mines that remained active until the early 1900s, but were already exploited by the Romans in antiquity.
Its name may derive from the Lombard Casal Regiium, hinting at its early existence. Some documents even suggest that a parish church was present in the 5th or 6th century.
A certain date confirming the village’s presence comes from a document of 1003, marking the beginning of its documented history, which over time involved the same families and recurring events in the area.
The Paleologi, Spinola, Dukes of Mantua, Grillo, and Ristori are among the families who shaped the village’s history and its castle. The austere manor is perhaps one of the oldest in Monferrato, dating back to the 10th century, as indicated by architectural features typical of that period.
Perched on a steep rocky outcrop overlooking Liguria, the castle stands in a secluded spot outside the village, surrounded by nature. Its silhouette on the horizon is truly striking.
Because of this scenic setting, in 1967 the castle was chosen for the television adaptation of Manzoni’s The Betrothed, directed by Sandro Bolchi. It represented the residence of the Unnamed, the Eagle’s Nest where Don Abbondio goes to rescue Lucia.
Now owned by the Guglia counts, the castle was extended in the 12th century and underwent further modifications in the Renaissance and especially in the 18th century. Its decorated mullioned windows are remarkable, and the entrance lintel features a relief depicting a knight with shield and lance alongside a female figure flanked by two lions.
Among the village’s religious buildings, the parish church of St. Martin has a long history. Its origins may date back to the 12th century, but the current structure results from reconstruction begun in 1797 and inaugurated in 1835.
The white marble floors were installed at the behest and expense of King Victor Emmanuel.
