The Gran Monferrato Wine & Food Trail, established in 2021, is a project officially recognized by the Piedmont Region to support tourism and promote local food and wine products in the province of Alessandria. It was created within the Gran Monferrato Derthona Gavi Consortium.
The Trail connects three main areas of the province—Casale Monferrato, Acqui Terme, and Ovada—while passing through the Alessandria plain shaped by its rivers. These segments are organized into four themed routes: the Grignolino Trail (Casale area), the Wine Rivers Trail (plains), the Aromatics Trail (Acqui area), and the Dolcetto Trail (Ovada area). Each route highlights the region’s landscapes, vineyards, local producers, accommodations, and its artistic and historic heritage.
With a main route spanning approximately 700 km—the longest in Italy—visitors can explore the region’s vineyards, rich in DOC and DOCG denominations, taste the typical flavors of Piedmont and Alessandria, discover villages and towns, some of which are part of UNESCO World Heritage landscapes, learn about rural history, and experience local culinary traditions.
The Gran Monferrato Wine & Food Trail is an association composed of public members (around 120 municipalities) and private members (around 50 wineries, castles, and businesses). The founding members include the three Regional Wine Shops of the area: Enoteca Regionale di Acqui “Terme e Vino,” Enoteca Regionale di Ovada e del Monferrato, and Enoteca Regionale del Monferrato, together with the three lead municipalities of the project (Casale Monferrato, Acqui Terme, Ovada). The Alessandria and Asti Chambers of Commerce also played a key role in the project’s launch. The association is chaired by Carlo Ricagni, who leads the Board of Directors composed of Franco Angelini (Vice-Chair) and Federico Robbiano (Board Member). Its legal headquarters is at the Enoteca Regionale di Ovada e del Monferrato.
