Nothing certain is known about the etymology of the name, though many hypotheses have been suggested. Likely of Roman origin, the earliest document mentioning the small village dates back to 1152, followed by another in 1199.

Maranzana
The village of Maranzana is situated in a natural area of great significance, perched in a transitional zone that gently rises from the Po Valley towards the hills before steepening into the Apennines.
Fontanile
“Land rich in springs”—this is the meaning behind the name of Fontanile, a village historically abundant in fresh water that once fed small streams, marshes, and even a lake in the Rodiano Valley, as well as several public washhouses, one of which, dating back to 1687, can still be seen in the village today.
